A coverage figure only means something alongside the air-change rate it assumes. The Winix 5510 in our catalog publishes both: 1,881 square feet at one air change per hour. AHAM Verifide's seal instead gives a suggested room size based on 4.8 air changes per hour. Hold the same machine to that basis and the room size falls to roughly 392 square feet, about a fifth of the headline claim.

Air purifier boxes carry a square-footage number in large type. It is also very close to uninterpretable on its own, because coverage area is not a property of the machine. It is the output of a calculation, and the input that matters most is usually not printed.

Coverage is a calculation, not a specification

An air purifier has one meaningful performance figure: how much filtered air it delivers per minute. The EPA's guidance on home air cleaners puts it plainly — a portable air cleaner should have a clean air delivery rate large enough for the size of the room, and a higher CADR filters more particles and serves a larger area. AHAM Verifide describes CADR as its standard for measuring an air cleaner's efficacy, reported as separate scores for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust.

To turn that airflow figure into a room size, somebody has to decide how many times per hour the room's air should pass through the filter. That decision is the whole ballgame, and it is the part that gets left off the packaging.

We do not hold the air-change basis behind the Blueair 511i Max's 1,138 sq ft claim or the Levoit Core 400S-P's 1,733 sq ft claim, and we will not assume they use the same rate as the Winix. Without that number those two figures cannot be compared with each other, let alone with the Winix. We also do not hold third-party CADR test values for any of these three units.

This is not an accusation against either manufacturer. It is a structural feature of the category: publishing the rate is optional, so a coverage figure printed without one cannot be placed on the same scale as another.

How to buy without the missing number

Work from your room rather than from the box, and the missing rate stops mattering.

  1. Calculate your room's volume

    Purifiers work on volume, and floor area silently assumes an eight-foot ceiling that many rooms do not have.

    What to look for: Length times width times actual ceiling height, in cubic feet.

  2. Choose the air-change rate you want

    This is the assumption manufacturers make silently, and making it yourself is the entire fix.

  3. Convert to a required CADR

    CADR is the figure with an independent test behind it, so it is the one worth shopping on.
