Pet Dander: Air Purifier or a Better Furnace Filter?

They solve the problem in different places. A furnace filter treats every room the ductwork reaches, but only while the system is running. A portable purifier treats one room continuously, regardless of the HVAC. For pet allergies that disrupt sleep, the bedroom purifier usually does more; for whole-house dander load, the filter upgrade does. Doing both is not redundant.
Both, eventually, because they cover different ground. The furnace filter treats every room on the ductwork but only while the system runs. A purifier treats one room all the time. If the problem is worst in bed, start with the purifier; if it is a whole-house dander load, start with the filter.
Both reduce airborne particles. Neither removes the source, and neither is a treatment for an allergy.
Search for this and you get a great many pages that pick a winner. The honest answer is that they are not competitors: one is a coverage strategy and the other is a runtime strategy, and pet dander happens to defeat each of them in a different way.
The two failure modes
Each approach is strong exactly where the other is weak.
The furnace filter's weakness is time
It only filters while air is moving through the system, so in mild weather when the system barely runs, it is barely working.
What to look for: Whether your thermostat supports a continuous fan setting, which closes this gap at the cost of energy and a shorter filter life.
The purifier's weakness is space
It cleans the room it is standing in. Dander in the rest of the house is unaffected, and animals move.
What to look for: Where the animal actually spends its time, which is often not where the purifier ends up being placed.
Both are aimed at the right thing
Dander is particulate, and particles are what both technologies are measured on.
What to look for: MERV on the furnace filter, clean air delivery rate on the purifier. AHAM describes CADR as a measure reported for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust.
Neither addresses the source
Production continues, so both are managing a steady state rather than solving a problem.
What to look for: Realistic expectations, and grooming and cleaning habits alongside whichever device you buy.
If you start with the furnace filter
The upgrade path is straightforward: fit the highest MERV your system tolerates in your nominal size. The EPA puts it as at least MERV 13, or as high as the system will accommodate. Our catalog carries two MERV 13 filters in 20x25x1 and one MERV 11 in 12x24x1.

If you start with the purifier
Size it for the room rather than buying on the coverage claim. Size My Air's basis is that required CADR in CFM equals room volume in cubic feet times air changes per hour divided by 60, and we default to four air changes per hour for allergies. A 12 by 12 bedroom with an eight-foot ceiling is 1,152 cubic feet, which works out at about 77 CFM.

The order we would do it in
- Upgrade the furnace filter to the highest MERV your system takes. It is the cheaper intervention and it covers the whole house.
- Check it after one month. With animals it will not follow the stated interval, and knowing your real interval matters more than the upgrade did.
- Add a purifier to the room where symptoms are worst, sized on volume rather than on the coverage claim.
- Only then consider a second purifier, and put it where the animal sleeps rather than where you do.
