What a "4,500 Sq Ft" Dehumidifier Coverage Claim Actually Means

Coverage claims on dehumidifiers are not defined by any test procedure. The three 50-pint units in our catalog claim 4,500 to 5,000 square feet, while Size My Air's own basis puts a 50-pint unit at roughly 2,500 square feet of moderately damp space. The regulated number is pints per day; the square-footage figure is the manufacturer's own interpretation of what that covers, and it assumes conditions closer to slightly humid than to a wet basement.
Nothing defines it. Pints per day is set by federal test procedure; square-foot coverage is the manufacturer's own claim with no test behind it. The three 50-pint units we list claim 4,500 to 5,000 square feet, while Size My Air sizes the same 50 pints at roughly 2,500 square feet of moderately damp space.
The difference is mostly an assumption about how damp the space is, not a disagreement about the machine.
Two numbers appear on the front of every dehumidifier box. One of them is regulated and comparable. The other is not, and it is the larger and more reassuring of the two, which is why it is on the front of the box.
The number that is defined
Capacity in pints per day has a specific meaning. The US Department of Energy's test procedure for dehumidifiers defines it as the volume of water in pints removed from ambient air per day, normalized to a standard ambient temperature and relative humidity. That normalization is what lets you put two brands side by side and have the comparison mean anything. ENERGY STAR describes the same measure, in pints per 24 hours, and notes that the capacity you need depends on the size of the space and the conditions in it.
That last clause is doing a lot of work, and it is where coverage claims come from.
The number that is not
Square-foot coverage is a manufacturer's answer to "conditions in it" — a set of assumptions, converted into a room size, printed without the assumptions. Here is what our three 50-pint units claim:

What we would tell you instead
Size My Air's own sizing basis starts at 10 pints per day for every 500 square feet of moderately damp space, then multiplies: 1.3 for very damp, 1.6 for wet, and 2.0 where there is standing water. It is our basis, published on our calculator, and we would rather show it to you than hide it inside a number on a box.
Run 50 pints back through it. Fifty pints divided by 10 pints per 500 square feet gives five units of 500, or about 2,500 square feet — and that is before any dampness multiplier. Apply the wet multiplier of 1.6 and the same machine covers roughly 1,560 square feet. Apply the standing-water multiplier and it covers about 1,250.
- Moderately damp — about 2,500 sq ft on our basis.
- Very damp — about 1,920 sq ft.
- Wet — about 1,560 sq ft.
- Standing water — about 1,250 sq ft, and you have a drainage problem to fix first.
A manufacturer claiming 4,500 square feet is not lying. It is describing the mildest end of that range, applied to a space that is barely damp at all. If your basement smells like a basement, you are not in that scenario.
Which of these matters for your purchase
Coverage claims are close to useless for choosing between units, because they are not comparable. These are the specifications that are.
Rated pints per day
It is the only capacity figure with a defined test behind it, which makes it the only one worth comparing across brands.
What to look for: The DOE-rated figure. All three units here are 50 pints, so this specification does not separate them.
Your own dampness level
It moves the required capacity by a factor of two, which is far more than any difference between units in the same class.
What to look for: An honest assessment: musty smell and damp-feeling air is moderately damp; visible wall moisture is wet; water on the floor is a drainage job, not a dehumidifier job.
Ceiling height
Square footage ignores volume, and a dehumidifier works on volume. The scaling below is part of Size My Air's own basis.
What to look for: Our basis scales linearly against a standard eight-foot ceiling, so on Size My Air's method a ten-foot basement needs about a quarter more capacity than its floor area alone suggests.
Energy Star certification
It speaks to running cost over a machine that may run for months at a time, which is a real difference where capacity is not.
What to look for: Of the three here, only the Midea carries it in our data.

We do not have the assumed temperature, relative humidity or ceiling height behind any of these three coverage claims, because manufacturers do not generally publish them. That is precisely why we do not use coverage claims to size anything.
