Not on the strength of their HEPA rating. Clean air delivery rate is measured against tobacco smoke, pollen and dust, all of which are particles, and a HEPA filter is a particle filter. Odors are gas-phase molecules that pass through it. Removing them requires an adsorbent stage, usually activated carbon, and that is a separate component with its own separate lifespan.
Not by virtue of being HEPA. Clean air delivery rate is measured as reduction of tobacco smoke, pollen and dust — all particles — and a HEPA filter is a particle filter. Odors are gas-phase molecules that go straight through. Odor removal needs a separate adsorbent stage, normally activated carbon.
Some odors ride on particles and are partly removed with them, which is why the effect is not zero.
Somebody buys an air purifier because the kitchen smells of last night's fish, runs it for a week, and concludes the machine is defective. The machine is fine. It was never measured on the thing they bought it for.
Every number on the box is about particles
AHAM Verifide describes clean air delivery rate as its standard for measuring an air cleaner's efficacy, indicating the volume of filtered air delivered, with separate scores for tobacco smoke, pollen and dust. The EPA's guidance likewise frames the choice around having a CADR large enough for the room, noting that a higher CADR filters more particles and serves a larger area.
Read those two descriptions together and the boundary is clear. Smoke, pollen and dust are things with mass and size that a fibrous filter can physically intercept. An odor is a molecule dispersed in air. It is smaller than the mechanism by a wide margin, and a filter that stops it is not doing the same job by a different name — it is a different technology.
What actually removes an odor
Activated carbon works by adsorption: gas molecules adhere to an enormous internal surface area within the carbon. It is genuinely effective, and it has two properties worth understanding before you rely on it.
- It saturates rather than clogs. A particle filter announces the end of its life by going grey and restricting airflow. Carbon gives no such signal. It simply stops adsorbing, silently, while the fan keeps running and the display keeps saying the air is clean.
- Quantity matters. Adsorption capacity scales with how much carbon is present. A thin carbon-impregnated mesh wrapped around a HEPA filter and a substantial carbon bed are both described as carbon filtration, and they are not comparable.

Does the smell come and go with an activity?
Episodic odours are exactly what a carbon stage handles well.
What to look for: A clear association with cooking, pets, or an open window at particular times.
Is it worse when the space is closed up?
That pattern points at something being generated continuously in the space itself.
What to look for: A smell that builds over hours in an unoccupied room, which suggests a source rather than an event.
Does it smell damp or earthy?
That is a moisture signature, and no amount of filtration addresses moisture.
What to look for: A humidity reading. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent. Above that, dehumidification is the first move, not purification.
Only then, buy for odour
A carbon stage is a real capability, but it should be managing a smell rather than fighting a cause.
What to look for: A published carbon filter, ideally with a stated replacement interval, and a unit sized correctly for the room's particle load as well.
