Capacity is a federally defined measurement, so it compares honestly between models. Coverage area is a marketing figure with no published basis, and the two frequently disagree.
The number on the front of a dehumidifier is its capacity: how much water it can pull out of the air in a day. The number on the side of the box, in bigger type, is usually a square-footage claim. Those two numbers frequently disagree, and the second one is doing most of the selling.
Start from the space, not the product
Energy Star puts it plainly: the capacity you need depends on two things, the size of the space and the conditions in it. Not the brand, not the price, and not the square-footage figure a manufacturer chose to print.
Dampness matters as much as floor area, which is why two basements of the same size can need meaningfully different machines. A basement that smells musty after heavy rain is a different problem from one where the walls bead with moisture in July.
Four specifications decide whether a dehumidifier will actually hold your space. Everything else is convenience.
Capacity, in pints per day
This is the only figure that says how much water the machine can remove. The Department of Energy defines it as the volume of water in pints removed from ambient air per day, normalized to standard conditions, so it compares honestly between models.
What to look for: Size it from your floor area and dampness. Undersizing is the expensive failure: the unit runs continuously, never reaches target, and wears out sooner for it.
Low-temperature operation
A compressor dehumidifier loses capacity as air cools and can frost up. In an unheated basement, a large machine that stalls in November is worse than a smaller one that keeps running.
What to look for: Automatic defrost, or a stated minimum operating temperature. This is a separate specification from capacity and is often buried.
Drainage
Tank size decides how often you carry water up the stairs. A continuous drain removes the chore entirely, but only if there is somewhere for the hose to go.
What to look for: A continuous drain port if you have a floor drain or sump nearby; the largest tank you can find if you do not. Gravity drainage needs the unit above the drain, otherwise you need a pump.
Where it physically fits
These are big appliances and they need clearance around the intake to work. A unit that only fits by being wedged against a wall will underperform its rating.
What to look for: Check width and depth against the actual spot, including the stairwell it has to come down.
About that square-footage claim

Now compare that with the coverage claims. All three machines below remove the same 50 pints per day - the figure that is federally defined and genuinely comparable. Their advertised coverage is 4,500, 4,500 and 5,000 square feet: three different answers for identical capacity. Whatever those numbers are derived from, it is not the capacity.
We have not been able to establish how any of these manufacturers derives its coverage figure. There is no published, comparable standard for the square-footage claim in the way there is for capacity, and none of the three states its assumptions. Best for a cold basement

The largest tank of the three at 2.7 gallons, which straightforwardly means fewer trips up the stairs. If there is no floor drain or sump within hose reach, tank size is the specification you will actually live with. It is also much the widest at 24.25 inches, so measure the spot.

Midea Midea 50 Pint Dehumidifier
Energy Star certified and Wi-Fi enabled, at 15.43 inches wide and 11.1 deep - narrower than the Frigidaire, though the GE is narrower still. The trade is the smallest tank of the three at 1.6 gallons, so plan on running a continuous drain rather than emptying it.

When a bigger dehumidifier is the wrong answer
A dehumidifier manages symptoms. If water is entering the basement, through a crack, a failed vapour barrier, poor grading outside or a leaking pipe, then capacity is not your problem and no machine on this page will fix it. You will simply be paying to pump the same water back out of the air, continuously, forever.
- Water appears after rain, in the same place each time - that is a drainage or grading problem outside.
- Damp patches low on the walls, with white mineral deposits - that is moisture coming through the masonry.
- The whole space is humid but nothing is wet - that is what a dehumidifier is for.
- Only one corner is damp, near a pipe - find the leak first.
Is it better to oversize a dehumidifier?
Mildly oversizing is fine. The unit reaches your target humidity sooner and then cycles off; the costs are purchase price, bulk and noise rather than effectiveness. Undersizing is the failure that hurts: continuous running, target never reached, and more wear for it.
What humidity should I set it to?
The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity. Lower is not automatically better, since it costs energy to hold.
Do I need a pump?
Only if the drain is higher than the unit. Gravity drainage through a hose is simpler and has nothing to fail, but it needs somewhere lower for the water to go. If your only drain is a sink or a window, you need a model with a built-in pump.
