Those are not demanding numbers. The EPA's guidance is to compare your room's area against the maximum recommended room size on the packaging, and to size up where ceilings run above eight feet — which is the same instruction expressed in floor area rather than volume.

So what should you actually choose on?

Once every candidate satisfies a 77 CFM requirement, capacity stops separating them. Three things do.

For a machine that runs beside your head while you sleep, these matter more than coverage claims.

  1. Noise at the speed you will actually run

    A purifier you turn down to sleep is delivering less clean air than the one you sized for, so a unit that is quiet at a useful speed is doing more real work than a louder one with a higher rating.
